During E3, it was revealed that the original Silent Hill is getting not only a graphical face lift but also a new spin on the storytelling and evolution of the A.I. in quite a few ways. If it works, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories could be one of the best games in the series.
Yes, it is going to remain faithful to certain story aspects from the original storyline. You’re Harry Mason. You’re looking for your daughter, who has gone missing. You’re stuck in a hellish mirror image of the world that is mostly empty other than the few characters you run into and the multitudes of enemies that hunt you.
In terms storytelling elements like the monsters and “the other world” are being changed. The “Other World,” rather than being the dark but fully of heat, ends up being dark and icy. It’s somewhat akin to the ninth level of Hell for those of you who have read Dante’s Inferno. It’s going to be very dark and very cold.
Enemies will also be changing. Rather than having the enemies we know and, in some cases, loathed, the enemies are going to start with a base form. How and what they evolve into is apparently up to you and your play style. They evolve based off how, where and if you decide to run or kill the enemy. The evolution, since all of the enemies are based off of what haunts a character the most, will symbolize that your character is becoming more emotionally and mentally scarred.

Speaking of running or killing enemies, the play style that they are going for now is more on the survival aspect of horror. So rather than only running when you’re out of ammo and don’t have enough time to switch to a good melee weapon, you’re going to be spending a lot of time running. That being said, developers have said that they are making the enemies smarter, so they will actually use tactics and try to out maneuver you during your escapes. Before all you had to was make sure that you didn’t accidentally run yourself into a corner, now they’ll try to force you to run into a corner.
Another change in storytelling elements is the use of a cell phone. Much like the random messages you find that help you through different puzzles you got in the original games, you’ll get random texts that will either be that straight forward or cryptic. Also, much like the rare occasions where Harry got pleading calls for help either in person, over TV or over phones that seem randomly placed, he’ll be getting calls for help over his cell phone. It is also a camera phone that will occasionally pick up more than what meets the eye on occasion.
The biggest change in gameplay, other than the focus on the survival aspect of the genre, is only showing up for the Wii. The Wii-mote’s motion sensitivity will actually act as the controls for the flashlight. So you’re actually going to be getting physically involved in the terror.
The only problem that fans of the series might have with this game is the distribution for consoles. The game is coming to the Wii, PS2 and PSP. However, if you have either of these systems the game will be coming out sometime this fall.

I am cautiously optimistic about this game. Silent Hill means way too much to me, and I can see myself hating this interpretation of the story. Only time will tell.

I’m actually interested to see how they would do it. I just wish that they would actually release it for the current generation consoles. I’ve got no problems with the choice of the PSP but the PS2?
