The countdown timer has been vanquished!  In normal Japanese gaming magazing fashion, Weekly Shonen Jump has spoiled Square Enix’s fun by unveiling the surprise at the end of their latest countdown.  The game is called The Four Warriors of Light: A Final Fantasy Anecdote, and it is being developed for the DS.  From the look of the roughly translated title, it seems like this may be a side story to the original Final Fantasy.  Graphically, it looks a lot like Final Fantasy III DS, with some truly awful looking face textures.  Hopefully that can be fixed by release.  But apparently, your characters appearance changes based on their equipment, so maybe that will make up for the poor texturing.  The game is set to release in Japan this fall.
