SPOILERS AHEAD
1. “The struggle for humanity is a war without end. And war……war never changes”. (Fallout 3)
This quote pretty much sums up the entire game. The Capital Wasteland has turned into a post apocalyptic war zone. Super mutants are everywhere, the water is poisoned, people are mutated etc. This all happened because of war. Even after people have seen the outcomes of war and what it can do, they’re still fighting, they are still at war with each other. You try to help, you try to fix the Wasteland but it’s no use. Like the quote says, the struggle for humanity is a war without end. We will always be struggling for humanity. It’s a war. And war…..war never changes.
2. “The Cake Is A Lie” – Portal
The Cake Is A Lie essentially comes down to the fact that the thing motivating you throughout the entire game was nothing more than a fictitious motivator. Throughout the game you were promised cake when you completed the game. Glados, the voice guiding you through the game was always telling you about cake that you would have. Although, in the end of the game it is discovered that there was no cake. You were misled. The phrase became so popular that it’s used in every day life. For example, one can say, “I was promised extra pay but the cake was a lie”.
3. “A Man Chooses, A Slave Obeys” – Bioshock
Do I really even have to explain this one? This quote says so much about our generation as gamers. The entire game you don’t even realize it but you’re mindlessly listening to some fellow named Atlas. You’ve never met him, you don’t know who he is, you just trust him. You have no good reason to, you just do. Whatever he tells you you’ll do. What does that say about us as gamers? We just follow blindly? We just hope that the outcome will be ok? In the end it turns out we get screwed over because Atlas isn’t who we thought he was. If Atlas had told us to kill a city of innocent people would we have? How far would we have gone for him? We were acting as slaves, we were obeying. A man chooses, a slave obeys.

4. “Welcome To America” (GTA IV)
Welcome To America Niko. Niko is fresh off the boat from eastern Europe. He dreams of a life of prosperity and change. Although, the America Niko experiences is one filled with crime and harsh living conditions. Niko ends up back in a life filled with violence and killing. Due to the life Niko leads in America it leads him to believe that this is all there is out there. To him, this is what America symbolizes, murder, violence, crime. There’s just no escaping it. Killing, corruption, violence, welcome to America.
5. ” War has changed. It’s no longer about nations, ideologies, or ethnicity. It’s an endless series of proxy battles fought by mercenaries and machines. War – and its consumption of life – has become a well-oiled machine. War has changed. ID-tagged soldiers carry ID-tagged weapons, use ID-tagged gear. Nanomachines inside their bodies enhance and regulate their abilities. Genetic control. Information control. Emotion control. Battlefield control. Everything is monitored and kept under control. War has changed. The age of deterrence has become the age of control… All in the name of averting catastrophe from weapons of mass destruction. And he who controls the battlefield… controls history. War has changed. When the battlefield is under total control… War becomes routine.” (Metal Gear Solid 4)

The very first time we are introduced to Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 4 we are greeted with an optimistic view of the future of war. The way we fight wars is truly stunning and as each side looks to gain the upper hand we are met with technology of such cunning ability that we can’t tell what type of a monstrous machine future conflicts will become. As Snake famously says, “When the battlefield is under total control… war becomes routine.” Will war really become so frequent that we will come to expect it around every corner? Snake lays it out in this quote that when you truly sit down and think about, you might begin to feel a slight shiver down your spine.

Metal Gear Solid 4’s perspective on war and the how war has changed is as acurate as it comes.. Every time I’ve played through each of the MGS games im always left thinking to myself on the way the game has played out, is this really what war is becoming, And it is! Sort of makes you look at your own life and makes you wonder what purpose do you have in the world.

Theres a bunch of good star wars game quotes:
Honor is of no use to the dead
Those who beg for mercy are too weak to deserve it
But I still like this list. The fallout 3 on actually sent shivers down my spine the way he says it. And has anybody noticed: Fallout 3 says war never changes. MGS4… War has changed

I think MGS4 has numerous quotes that stick with you, from one of the early trailers: "Some legends must die, some bloodlines must come to an end. Some stories…can't be told by words." Or "A Hero will fall…a Legend will rise" But yeah, MGS4 offers something that no other game offers, it offers realism, it actually has political, economic, scientific as well as geopolitical ideas behind it.

ahhhhh come on how can you leave the joker out?
batman arkham asylum has to be one of the best games ive ever played.
that quote from the joker " attention arkham inmates we have a escaped patient he should be considered costumed and dangerous".
or the "dresses like a bat, i know what a freak wright? i think the best thing to do is to put him out of his misery"
i pissed myself laughing when i herd both of those, best quotes ever, 10 times better than any of those ones up there.
quotes dont have to be serious, to be "quotes of this generation" have a seance of humor.

"Those who beg for mercy are too weak to deserve it "
This quote fails to make sense. The person who is the object of mercy will be in a subordinate situation. So basically Mercy is a gift upon those who are in a vulnerable position. To beg for mercy is not demeaning since being in that state of desiring mercy is already demeaning.
September 9, 2009

I think a better way of wording this would be "those who beg for mercy are not good enough to deserve it". The thought being that no one should lower himself or herself to the point of begging for mercy. At least I think that's really what they're getting at. I still don't agree, though.

Funny how MGS4 says War has changed while Fallout 3 proclaims War never changes.

I'd say you're completely wrong. Everyone familiar with this generation's video games knows of Portal and the one quote goes hand in hand with it. Hell, I've known people who know nothing of games and still know the quote. By definition, I'd say that's pretty famous.

1) Not entirely memorable. Great game. Great intro character building sequence (the birth/growing up in the vault). If this listing is ranked by impact or coolness or whatever, Fallout 3's quote does not belong at #1.
2) This belongs at one. It's a truly memorable quote. The mere utterance of this line evokes memories of the storytelling style and plot that is Portal. Sardonic Wit at it's best in the gaming world. Passive aggressive flair.
3) I agree that "Would you kindly?" would have a greater impact here. While the Orwellian sort of quote supplied here does highlight the tone of the game, it is hardly original in its content or delivery. It does not bring back any memories of Rapture for me, or the character who utters it.
4) "Welcome to America" is a great quote for establishing the setting of GTA IV. It is not memorable or original. It's almost cliche. It would be a great way to start or sum up a review of GTA IV but does not belong on a list of great video game quotes.
5) This is not a quote. It's a freaking thesis on modern Clancy-esque warfare with the central point of "War has changed" mentioned ad naseum for dramatic effect. Yes, MGS4 is cool for having this stuff. I will say again however, this is not a quote. Get it out of here.
Here are quote that I feel may be contenders to title of "Greatest Video Game Quotes of This Generation":
1) "Explanation: It's just that… you have all these squishy parts, master. And all that water! How the constant sloshing doesn't drive you mad, I have no idea…"
This quote from HK-47 in Knights of the Old Republic is both hilarious and a prime example of Bioware's excellence in creating fully fleshed out characters (no offense HK!).
2) "Bet you can't stick it!"
Cortana teases the MC with this one in the Halo 2 gaming trailer. Making light of the sticky plasma grenades almost feels like breaking the 4th wall somehow, but it's a great quote nonetheless. Also worthy of mentioning is practically ANYTHING that Sgt. Johnson says: "When I joined the Corps, we didn't have any fancy-schmanzy tanks. We had sticks! Two sticks, and a rock for the whole platoon—and we had to share the rock!"
3) "Objection!"
This is short at one word, but in Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney it is not only quote but a game mechanic! Screaming this into your DS in public will definitely make for some memorable gaming experiences. The fact that shouting objection and pointing your your finger at someone is also in internet meme territory helps.
Honorable mention: Unit quotes from Blizzard games. "Zug zug!" "My life for Auir!"

“What more concise symbol of humanity is there than a clenched fist; a raised knife; a loaded gun? We are destroyers, colonisers, devourers – our appetites define us. Human achievement is a destructive thing – it is measured in conquest and bloodshed.”, Toshiro Makabe – Shogo:MAD, Monolith, 1998

The MGS4 one is hilarious. It's meant to be a quote, not a book. On top of that, even though it's so long, it's not even that good! The rest were fine… except for the incredibly overrated and now just plain boring Portal quote.

You know the sad part, the amount of lines in the MGS4 quote, when compared as a proportion of the total lines, is probably tiny compared to the rest of these games’ quotes.

My favorite video game quote from recent memory is one that requires the context of the conversation, so it doesn't really stand by itself. It's from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
