If only the real world were as mystical as the world of Professor Layton and his young ward, Luke. This mystery game for the Nintendo DS is filled to the brim with brain teasers and puzzles that can boggle the mind for hours on end. Professor Layton and the Curious Village also boasts impressive artwork, interesting characters and catchy tunes which are just a few reasons why this game is not only memorable, but addicting.

The game follows the adventures of world famous mystery solver, Professor Layton and his apprentice Luke. This adventure has the pair in a quest to help a woman named Dahlia Reinhold figure out the location of the inheritance her late husband, Baron Reinhold. Through out the plot, you’ll be investigating mysterious happenings around town that include family secrets, kidnappings and (dun dun dun!) murder. All jokes aside, Professor Layton and Luke will be in mortal peril, and its up to you, the gamer, to save the day.

From the first moment I laid my eyes on the town of St. Mystere: I was hooked. The game cinematics were reminiscent of old crime stories that would rival Sherlock Holmes’ adventures. The feel of the town was so old fashioned and riddled with interesting townspeople that I felt as though I wanted live there so that I could come up with puzzles and riddles of my own. Sure, that does sound a little crazy, but who amongst us does not love a good riddle every now and again? Well, the point is that I was instantly immersed in the world of Professor Layton. I enjoyed this game so much that I even tolerated tasks that would be considered boring in real life, such as decorating a room or chasing down an escape cat. While these chores would also probably be boring in other video games, in Professor Layton and the Curious Village: it means another opportunity to talk with the quirky townsfolk or an additional chance at solving a new complicated brain teaser. I, personally, enjoyed completing the odd jobs that I was given and instead considered it an exercise in meeting fascinating people.

Now let’s get down to the bread and butter of Professor Layton and the Curious Village: the puzzles. I love brain teasers and riddles, and this game delivers when it comes to puzzles since the difficulty varies along with the type of puzzle. Professor Layton as well as the villagers of St. Mystere will throw their toughest riddles at you, and they actually use lateral thinking, simple and challenging math formulas, and common sense.

While Professor Layton and the Curious Village isn’t the best game on the planet, it is easily one of the best DS titles available. It has great animation cut scenes, surreal townsfolk, and an intriguing plot, and if that’s not enough: the great puzzles are sure to keep your eyes glued to your DS for several hours. So if you’re in need of a good brain teaser, strap on your thinking caps and check out Professor Layton and the Curious Village: you’ll be hooked until the final riddle is solved.
