In a recent story on G3, a Gears of war title of some kind was reportedly rumored to ship with Kinect support. The rumor that orginated on IGN reported that the announcement would be made on this year’s Spike TV’s Video Game Awards. Those who watched the program this past Saturday night already know no such announcement was made. Normally, since no announcement confirming the rumor to be true was made, one would simply pass it off as a generated rumor and move on. However, Epic Games’ Design Director Cliff Bleszinski recorded a brief Gametrailers promo for the award show telling all about a big Gears of War announcement.
“We will be showing off some new Gears of War gameplay. It’s going to be awesome. You’re going to love it. It’s not what you’re expecting,“ Bleszinski said quickly.
Going back to IGN’s rumor, it was also mentioned that their source didn’t specify whether or not it was Gears of War 3 that would receive Kinect support, or if a previous Gears title would be retro-fitted with the device. If you listen closely to the Gametrailers promo, Cliff Bleszinski only promotes a “Gears of War” announcement. That type of ambiguity isn’t unheard of in the industry, but it’s definitely interesting when you keep the rumor in mind.
It would be strange if an already released Gears title was supported by Kinect. If Gears of War 3 doesn’t receive the treatment of the fabled rumor, it’s more likely that a smaller Xbox Live Arcade Gears of War title with Kinect would ever see life. Perhaps we will see this announcement made at next year’s Pax East in March.
