Metal Gear Solid: Rising Preview – Will it cut it?

Its been a while since the announcement of Metal Gear Solid: Rising at E3 2009. Still, with no release date planned, I’ve been wondering if all the hype regarding the up and coming KONAMI masterpiece (we’ll see) will step up to the plate. The game will be in between Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 in terms of chronological order. Who plays the main character you say, Is it Snake? Do you remember Raiden from Metal Gear Solid 2? Snake is too old and slow to play a role in this game. With his first appearance being in Metal Gear Solid 2 and also re-appearing in Metal Gear Solid 4, you now get the chance to control Raiden with his stealthy, katana chopping, Samurai Ninja techniques as opposed to Snake’s slow and patient but brutal technique.

Somehow I don’t think I’m gona fit in with this game, all this fast paced ninja stuff, slicing body parts, throw stealth in, and I don’t think all quite adds up when it comes to Metal Gear Solid. Maybe this is just me wanting to stick with good old Snake and the enjoyment I had with him in previous titles was next to none.

This time round you get to cut body parts, slash off arms and slice weapons in half. What we are told though, is you must be careful and strategise what you intend to cut off. You can choose to kill your enemies or just say “hey, I want to take your arm home as a souvenir for Snake” the latter meaning you can cut off arms and let your enemy run off in fear. All this doesn’t sound like a true Metal Gear Solid game to me, what do you think? Taking parts, ammunition, life and energy from your enemies is also something new in a way were you also have to strategise what you take.

Stealth will still be a big part of the game say Konami, just not the same stealth your used to with the previous games. “Hunting Stealth” is what Konami call it. More exciting to my ears is the fact we may be taking Raiden to different heights and using his acrobatic style to fight enemies, maybe jumping and spinning round platforms and boxes to surprise the enemy might work in bringing this game together for me. This evolves more speed and an acrobatic style which will prove some getting used to in the controls for the game. Konami are working on the controls and I sure as hell wouldn’t want be sitting, picking out which buttons do what. There could be endless possibilities with the new speedy, stealth style the game implements, but really what needs to be a big success is the ease of which combinations and buttons you will need to master, if any.

You will never be rewarded for killing humans Konami say, so how is this new title going to impress us if we aren’t going to be rewarded for killing our enemies? We’ll just have to wait and see I suppose. Cyborgs and Mechs are enemies you can choose to kill stone dead, or maybe just stick to the not so fun way of slicing off parts of those who die more interestingly when shot with a gun. Of course this is just my opinion. All this may sound great to a wider audience this time round, maybe people that like slicing and cutting in a game they choose to play. Somehow I don’t think this will cut it for me, Sticking to the old way with Snake sounds much better. Buy hey, I can’t judge the game when I haven’t played it, or can i?

The game will be released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC and was supposed to be out this year. We don’t know for sure yet.

What do you think of the up and coming Metal Gear Solid Rising? What do you want from it? Is it going to be better than previous titles with its new style?

It actually sounds like this game will be a direct competitor to Ninja Gaiden III. Although I don’t feel like this game is canonical to the MGS series, I’m sure we’ve all sort of imagined playing the role of Null/Frank Jaeger/Gray Fox/Cyborg Ninja/Olga Gurlukovich…and so we are, except its his/her ‘spiritual successor’ aka Raiden. Funny thing is, this is almost exactly what Tecmo is describing NG3 to be like. So it’ll be interesting to see how the two compare. I’m personally a big fan of both, but MGS steals my heart.

Yea I love MGS a lot, but based on what I’ve seen and read on MGS Rising, I don’t think it will be anywere near as good as previous titles. Really disapointed in what they’ve decided to go with, slashing and cutting aint my thing and shouldn’t be introduced to a MGS title.

I’m not completely opposed to the game..just a bit weary. After all, it’s Kojima’s series afterall, and regardless if this was a push from Konami, I doubt he’d let it be released w/out that quality metal gear polish. What I’m worried about is the game mechanics…more specifically the health. I find that absorbing energy orbs from a downed enemy is as rudimentary as collecting rings/coins/orbs/points from jumping on enemies. What I loved about the MGS games is that health (in the form of rations) were generally given to those willing to explore the environment. Of course you could shake own an enemy for food and ammo. But it wasn’t always a given that they would have any. So you were encouraged to search while still being stealthy. I feel like this mechanic seems to be stripped away from rising. But maybe things will change. After all this game was expected to release at the end of this year, and its been pushed back indefinitely ATM. So maybe theyre revising these things. One can hope.

Kojima doesn’t work for Konami anymore, he has no say in how this game goes. It’s another guy doing the whole thing. I can’t remember his name mind you.

Are you sure about that? As far as i know Kojima has is own productions studio but that is still under the Konami umbrella… kind of like DICE and EA. or Like the newly announced Yakuza Studio w/ Sega. I know originally the game was not supposed to be headed by Kojima, however, the reason for the delay was because he’s taking more of the driver seat than he had previously mentioned, IIRC. As a matter of fact if you just google “Kojima Production” the link is based off of Konami’s main page.
