Everyone knew that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was going to sell a ton of copies and make Activision a mountain of money, but nobody expected it to soar this quickly. Activision is now reporting that the latest installment in the Modern Warfare series topped $1 Billion in just it’s first 16 days of being available.
“Call of Duty is now amongst that rarified group of sustained franchises like ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Lord of the Rings’ and the National Football League that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release,” Activision said in a press release today.
To put that in perspective, the best selling movie of all time “Avatar” took 17 days to top the billion dollar mark.
But again, the question that I raise is how long will gamers continue to support the Call of Duty series? The ball is already rolling on the next Call of Duty game scheduled to be released this time next year. Don’t get me wrong, Modern Warfare 3 is an excellent game and you can check out my review here, but I can’t imagine gamers continuing to dish out $60 every year for a game that is really not changing enough to justify that money. But for now, Call of Duty is again the King of the sales charts and looks to stay there for quite some time.
