Tom Clancy’s line of action/war games have been a staple in the video game scene ever since the current generation of Mr. Clancy’s games made their way onto home consoles back in 1998. However, the Ghost Recon series has had a few years off with it’s last release coming back in 2007 with Ghost Recon: Advanced WarFighter 2. Well the good people at Ubisoft are looking to get back on the proverbial horse with their upcoming release of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Future Soldier was first announced to have been in development in 2009 with a tentative release date of “fiscal year 2009-2010,” but the game has been oft delayed ever since. But the game is near completion and is set to be released on the masses this coming May 22nd, so let’s take a look at the game and see what all the hype has been about.
The setting of ‘Future Soldier’ fast forwards us into the near future(hence the name), to a time full of technologies that are do not exist in today’s world. When a bomb takes out one of your fellow Ghost Teams, you set out to acquire justice for your fallen comrades in such settings as Nigeria, Pakistan and Russia.
The gameplay is similar to the previous installments in the series, with the normal over the shoulder third person shooter style mechanics returning. All of the tactical squad based features will be making a return with quite a few improvements and additions to make die hard Ghost Recon fans happy. The feature that I am looking forward to the most is the ‘Gunsmith mode’ which allows the player to breakdown their gun to basically nothing and customize it from the ground up. Once the gun has been customized to your liking, you can take your new baby for a test drive to see how it performs and if it lives up to your standards. Boasting 50 weapons, there will certainly be something for anyone to customize a six shooter to their own personal preferences.
The multiplayer aspect of Future Soldier is also getting some new features with a full co-op main campaign and a plethora of new multiplayer maps and game modes, most notably ‘Guerilla’ which is a wave combay mode similar to that of Gears of War’s Horde mode. The standard multiplayer modes will be back as well and will surely keep you logged into Xbox Live or PSN for hours on end.
I have to say that I am extremely excited for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, I have always been a huge fan of the Tom Clancy Games and the Ghost Recon franchise is no exception. Taking an already great game and adding what features they are adding and then throw all of that into a futuristic setting makes this one of the top games on my radar for 2012.
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will launch May 22nd, 2012 for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, with a windows version coming later this summer. Get ready to have your mind blown with the official single player campaign trailer below!
